Outdoor Education

Sender One has partnered with Stone Adventures to help climbers transition from the climbing gym to an outdoor setting safely and responsibly. Stone Adventures is an accredited guiding service based in Joshua Tree that specializes in guided climbing trips, and outdoor training.

Class Offerings

How to Belay from Above

When climbing outdoors it is often necessary to belay your partner from the top of the climb, or while tethered to a belay station.  This course covers numerous methods of belaying and lowering from above, when to use each method, and which methods NOT to use!   Numerous belay devices will be used, especially the Grigri and Reverso (or similar).

Prerequisites: Lead belay card
Age requirement: 14 Years of age or older

Anchor Building

This class introduces the skills needed for setting up safe top rope anchors for outdoor climbing using bolts, traditional gear and natural terrain.

Cleaning & Rappelling

This class introduces how to recover your gear from a sport climbing anchor, and how to safely rappel using a placket style belay device and a third hand for added safety. We will cover how to clean a route, avoid accidents, quickly escape from the crag, and safely recover from mistakes on the wall.

Intro to Multi Pitch

Have you led a few single-pitch routes and feel ready to move on to bigger and better things? This class will show you how! This class introduces the fundamentals necessary to climb multiple pitches in a day. It will cover topics such as belay station management, strategies for belaying the second, lead swapping strategies, on route communication and rope management.

Self Rescue

A problem as simple as dropping your belay device can turn a good day at the crag, into a long one. This class is designed to give you the baseline rescue skills and techniques to safely retreat in the event of dangerous weather, or simply because a climb is taking longer than you thought and finishing isn’t an option. It will also teach students what to do when the belayer or the climber gets hurt during a single-pitch climb.
