Sender One Celebrates 1 Million Visits!

Sender One Celebrates 1 Million Visits!

the content

We have been a little quiet on the blog since the holidays, but we are SO excited to break that silence with a celebration!  With everyday that has passed since we first opened back in 2013, we have enjoyed the countless smiles and conversations we have had with all of our guests and members in both Santa Ana, and Los Angeles.  One thing we can count, however, is the number of people that come through our door, and we are super excited to say that we have just hit our...

1 Millionth Check In!!!

Sender One was visited for the 1 millionth time by the one and only, Charles Landis!  We are really excited to share this milestone with him, as he has been a long standing member of the Sender One Community, and was kind enough to tell us a bit about why he keeps coming back to Sender One -- 1,224 times (and counting) so far!

Charles Landis, Sender One's 1 Millionth Visitor!

How has climbing impacted your life?

Climbing has reconnected me with the passion I had in my earlier days.

When did you first start climbing at Sender One?

It was 6 months after the gym opened.  I don't recall what year that was, but I started climbing in December of that year. (December 2013!)

Why do you climb at Sender One?

I climb at Sender One because of the people.  It is a great atmosphere and a wonderful community, but it is not just the climbing, it is also the yoga and fitness.  I really like the yoga classes.  They are real yoga and not the corporate routines that have become so prevalent these days.  It also doesn't hurt Sender One has the best climbing walls in SoCal!

What is your favorite thing about the Sender One Community?

The community and the people are the best thing about Sender One.  It is such and open and fun place.  Everyone is really committed to what they are doing and they seem to be having fun.  I cannot think of a place I would rather be!

While Charles was our 1 millionth check in, we clearly could not have reached that without our amazing members, the guests they bring in, the kid crushers who celebrate their birthdays with us, or are a part of our youth programs, and all of our amazing yoga goers and fitness fanatics!  You are what makes Sender One so special, and we cannot wait to continue to be your favorite Southern California climbing gym!

Sender One Gift Guide | The Zen Seeker

Sender One Gift Guide | The Zen Seeker

the content

Who is the Zen Seeker?

The Zen Seeker is easily one of the most impressive people you know.  From their general flexibility and overall control of their body, to their peaceful sense of self and general self-awareness, the yogi is admired by many. Is there a special yogi in your life that you need a gift for this holiday?  Check out some of our ideas below!

Yoga Mat

Every Zen Seeker needs a good yoga mat!  Mats help keep a yogi's hands and feet from slipping during their yoga practice, which is critical to helping them hold different poses!  They also can provide a small amount of cushion to help alleviate any discomfort a yogi may feel in their hands or wrists during their practice.  They come in all kinds of designs, colors, and thicknesses, and can double as a good exercise mat for when your yogi wants to do other workouts as well!

Yoga Block

Yoga blocks are extremely helpful tools in any yoga practice.  They help fine tune a yogi's alignment, and assist with restorative stretching and poses! Yoga blocks also serve to make different poses more accessible to all body types and abilities! You can't go wrong with a good block or two!

Comfortable Yoga Clothes

Every yogi needs some comfy, stretchy clothes - just imagine trying to do those poses in stiff jeans!  Whether it's a pair of stretchy leggings, or a breathable shirt, your favorite Zen Seeker will loving having some new cozy clothes to complete their practice in. Find a variety of yoga clothing from Prana and Glyder at our Sender One Shop! Not sure what size to get? Pick up a Sender One Gift Card online or at the front desk!

*Sender One offers size exchanges on unworn clothing

Yoga Towel

It is easy to build up a sweat really quickly during a yoga practice!  A mat towel will help absorb moisture that collects on a yogi's mat, therefore minimizing slipping.  This way they can maintain maximum stability during their poses in their practice!

Books about Mindfulness

Mindfulness is all about holding awareness in the present moment.  Mindfulness and yoga are therefore extremely complimentary practices. Gift your yogi a book or two about mindfulness! Not only will it help them promote mindfulness during their yoga practice, but also in their day-to-day lives!

Sender One Punch Pass or Membership

Give your favorite Zen Seeker the gift of Yoga! With daily classes, access to aerial silks (in Santa Ana), and more, your favorite yogi will love the opportunity to further their practice at Sender One!

Sender One Gift Guide | The Kid Crusher

Sender One Gift Guide | The Kid Crusher

the content

Who is the Kid Crusher?

The Kid Crusher comes in many forms.  They may be new to climbing, and a little nervous, but they are willing to challenge themselves to make it higher and higher up the wall with each try, or they might be the kiddo that is scaling trees the second your back is turned!  Your favorite Kid Crusher might just be the next up and coming professional climbing athlete!  Kid Crushers amaze and inspire us all (and make us adult climbers pretty jealous of their muscle to body weight ratio - it gets a lot tougher to get up the wall as we grow up!)

Not sure what to get your favorite kid climber for the holidays? We're here to share some of our ideas. (Sender One Elf Hint: Most of these items can be found at both of our locations in Santa Ana, CA and Los Angeles, CA.)

Climbing Chalk + Chalk Bag

Smaller hands doesn't necessarily mean less sweat.  Your favorite kid climber is likely to want their chalk just as much as the adults!  Gift them some fun chalk and something cute to hold it in!  Many companies even make chalk bags with smaller openings for kid size hands!

Climbing Harness

If your Kid Crusher is all about heights, then they'll need a climbing harness to get on some ropes!  At Sender One we offer full body harnesses by Edelrid (for the littlest of crushers), as well as Black Diamond harnesses for those who are a bit older.  A harness is a must for climbing the ropes, or having a good time in Sender City, and your Kid Crusher will be stoked to have one of their own!

Climbing Shoes

Every climber, big or small, enjoys a new pair of climbing shoes! Get them a shoe that will help them soar up the walls better than a sneaker.  You can find shoes for smaller feet at the Sender One Shop! Not sure which ones to get? Pick up a gift card online or at the front desk!

*Sender One offers size exchanges on unworn gear

Climbing Movies

Not much gets us stoked about climbing more than a good climbing film.  Help share the passion of climbing with your favorite Kid Crusher with movies like: Meru, Valley Uprising, The Dawn Wall, and Free Solo - just to name a few!

Climbing Academy

Climbing Academy provides beginner climbers with a fun and exciting introduction to rock climbing!  Over the course of 4 weeks, kids will learn the fundamentals of climbing including technique, problem solving skills, basic knot tying & more!  Climbing Academy is a prerequisite to participate in our Climbing Teams. Learn more about Climbing Academy in SNA here, and at LAX here

winter rock climbing camp

Treat  your Kid Crusher to the fun of rock climbing camp!  Rock climbing has been shown to help build confidence, improve focus, and increase coordination and strength in children.  Through active instruction and supervised games, climbers ages 6 to 13 years old, will learn how to problem solve, work in groups and gain confidence in their ability to reach new heights! Sign up for morning camp, afternoon camp, or both for a full day of fun!

Sender One Gift Guide | Sporty Spice

Sender One Gift Guide | Sporty Spice

the content

Words By: Madeline Cronin

Who is Sporty Spice?

This is a climber who spends their free time outside, or at their local rock climbing gym, looking for a fun new route to send.  The sport climber is an endurance powerhouse, and is aware they may take a little ride should they fall (especially if above their last clip!).  Sporty Spice is looked upon with admiration by other climbers, and especially people on the ground wondering why they enjoy being so high in the air.

Not sure what to get your favorite sport climber for the holidays?  We're here to share some of our ideas.
(Sender One Elf Hint: Most of these items can be found at both of our locations in Santa Ana, CA and Los Angeles, CA.)

Climbing Chalk + Chalk Bag

You can never go wrong with a chalk bag! Chalk is a very important tool for a sport climber to have while they are up on a wall.  With a chalk bag, they can bring their chalk with them, no matter how high they climb, and keep their hands dry for the whole climb.  Sender One has a wide variety of chalk bags with unique designs and colors from brands like Static Climbing, Organic Climbing, E9, Edelrid, and Evolv!

Climbing Harness

A harness is clearly a very important piece of equipment for every sport climber.  Whether your Sporty Spice is just starting out, or is in need of a harness upgrade, it is a solid gift choice.  Find harnesses from Petzl, Black Diamond, and Edelrid at our Sender One Shop!

Climbing Shoes

Every climber needs a slick pair of shoes in order to zoom up the wall.  As is the case with most shoes (climbing or otherwise) they can be a very personal decision, so if you don't know which ones to get, pick up a gift card online or at the front desk!  Lots of outdoor retailers sell climbing shoes, and you can find some by Evolv, La Sportiva, and Scarpa at the Sender One Shop!

*Sender One offers size exchanges on unworn gear

Climbing Rope

Unless your Sporty Spice is Alex Honnold, they are going to need a climbing rope to keep them attached to the wall.  For sport climbing, a good climbing rope diameter is about 9.4 mm - 9.8 mm and we require they be 50m long to climb our walls at Sender One!  Find a quality rope selection from Sterling Ropes at our Sender One Shop!

Good Reads

While resting in between climbs, whether outside at the crag, or taking a break between burns at the gym, a good book is a great way to relax.  There are a lot of great climbing books that double as inspiring reads!  We recommend The Push by climber Tommy Caldwell, and Alone on the Wall by climber Alex Honnold.  While we don't have these at Sender One, you can easily order them online through Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Advanced Lead Climbing Class

Called "Flight School at our SNA location, the advanced lead class will help your Sporty Spice improve their sport climbing skillset.  The class is 2 hours long, and participants will learn improved belay techniques involving dynamic belaying, as well as get some practice and experience taking and catching some trickier falls.  SNA is already booking January classes, and LAX is in the process of solidifying some dates, so visit the links below, or purchase a gift card for your favorite climber to take the class once they find a date that works for them!

Fall Bouldering League | Highlights

Fall Bouldering League | Highlights

This year's Fall Bouldering League at Sender One Climbing SNA has come and gone, and this year was the biggest one yet!  The 6-week battle-royale gave teams of five a chance to compete for the title of Bouldering League Champions.

There were lock offs, dynos, and comp-style problems.  Each week offered new challenges for teams, who worked to complete as many problems as possible, while building friendships and cheering each other on.

"This is my fourth or fifth time competing," said Corey Cosby from the first-place team, The Pumpernoodles.  "It's fun; I'm friends with a lot of the people competing, and the league offers a good, healthy competitive atmosphere.  Anyone thinking about competing next season should just sign up.  You will meet so many people and make so many friends and lifelong climbing partners that it is worth it for that alone."

The Bouldering League is an inclusive, community-focused competition, and is largely scored based on individual climber growth.  Climbers of all skill levels worked together to push each other to climb their hardest every week.

"This was the biggest Bouldering League we have ever hosted!" said Wayne Huang, Sender One Fall 2018 Bouldering League Commissioner.  "One of the most rewarding parts of the whole experience for me was convincing some climbers who were either not planning on initially doing Bouldering League, or who were on the fence to try it out, and then later hearing that they had a really great time.  To me, climbing has always had the most open and unique community of any sport, and it really shines through during Bouldering League in my opinion."

In the spirit of keeping the competition friendly, the actual grade of each route is hidden.  This can encourage climbers to try problems that they may not even attempt otherwise.

"It's been a good run," said Blaine Smith from team, Over the Shoulder Boulder Holder. "Our team got the chance to cheer each other on and we all really stepped up our game.  The fact that the grades are blind really made this happen.  It's easy to get that grade stuck in your head, but when you come in and just go for all the climbs you think you can do, you surprise yourself.  Most of our team members are climbing at levels higher than what they normally would have attempted."

Above everything, Bouldering League serves to strengthen the sense of community at Sender One Climbing, and to encourage everyone to try hard in the process.

"Joining the Bouldering League has pushed me to do things I'm uncertain about," said Rika Williams of team, Crimpy Jugs.  "I've enjoyed meeting new and supportive people who have helped me to improve.  It doesn't really matter what level you are.  It feels so good to feel that kind of support from people."

As the chalk settled on the final night of Bouldering League, the top three teams were:

First Place:  The Pumpernoodles
Team Members:  Anni Vanderpool, Britney Berkstresser, Christian Monter, Clayton Boyd, Corey Cosby

Second Place: I Like Big Jugs and I Cannot Climb
Team Members: Bao Phan, Emily Nguyen, Jasmine CHoi, Paul Huynh, Rikka Cornelia

Third Place: Beta Bots
Team Members: Astrid Dawson, Christine Kim, Diana Keyes, Garrett Keyes, Greg Keyes

This season was also full of many hilarious and clever team names.  The War on Jugs was awarded the best team name.  A few hilarious honorable mentions were: Crimpanzees, Chalkoholics, and Crimp Scampi.

Another team name that holds a lot of significance was, Panda Express.  The name serves as a memory of a team member who suddenly passed away from an unrelated medical issue.  This team member's nickname was Panda Express, and his climbing buddies decided to name their Bouldering League team after him.

"I'd like to, both personally and on behalf of Sender One, thank every single participant this year," said Huang.  "We wouldn't be here without the community we are lucky enough to host, and each year only serves to further reinforce that to me.  Climbing, specificially in our community, is such a unique space in that it is friendly, open, and welcoming, but also that it sees so many people of all ages and from all walk of life intermingling.  I firmly believe that fostering and supporting meaningful interactions between different people is not only the key to having a healthy community, but also to teaching each person's individual growth."

What's Next?

The next Bouldering League will be held in Spring 2019 at Sender One LAX! There are two leagues per year: one in the Fall at Sender One SNA, and one in the Spring at Sender One LAX.  More information will be released as the time nears, so keep up the stoke and stay tuned!
